Phototherapy is the therapeutic use of ultraviolet light in a controlled setting to treat a number of skin conditions. Ultraviolet light occurs naturally as part of everyday sunlight. Sun rays include broad spectrum of UV light, which can be broken down into UVA, UVB and UVC wavelengths. UVC rays are filtered by the Earth’s ozone layers. The main wavelengths we see in sunlight include UVA and UVB rays. A specific wavelength of UVB light (311nm) is the most common form of phototherapy and can be utilized to improve a number of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo and pruritus (itchy skin). This is accomplished as narrowband UVB light helps to suppress the immune system within the skin which, when left untreated, can worsen these conditions.<\/p>\r\n

VIDA Dermatology is one of the very few locations in the Edmonton area where narrowband UVB phototherapy is offered. Fortunately, phototherapy treatments are currently 100% covered (free for patients) by Alberta Health Care. Only UV-protective goggles require purchasing.
