Newer Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) Treatment Options

July 20, 2022

Impacts of Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis, can be an embarrassing problem which is hard to conceal. Some individuals notice it early on in life, while for others it may occur as they age, or in certain physical or social situations. Further, physical discomfort, body odour, and increased risks for skin infections can also be caused by excessive perspiration. It may also be worsened by certain medications and certain neurological conditions.

Many facets of an individual’s life may be affected by excessive sweating. It can require changing into new clothes throughout the day, taking frequent showers, constantly wiping off sweat, or shunning handshakes with people, which can result in further emotional and psychological distress.

Hyperhidrosis – Treatment Options

There are several treatment options that one could consider when treating hyperhidrosis. The appropriate treatment option will depend on several factors, such as patient age, other medical conditions and medications, and the overall impact and effect of conducting one’s daily activities. Treatment options can include topical antiperspirants containing aluminum salts, topical and oral anticholinergic medications, iontophoresis,  injections, radiofrequency microneedling, and more invasive surgical interventions.

Injections for Hyperhidrosis

Injections are FDA approved for hyperhidrosis of the armpits. It is also often used to treat localized sweating of the hands and scalp. Fortunately, injections have very few adverse effects. Additionally, a topical numbing medication or ice is administered to these areas to further relieve any treatment discomfort. The sweating will also be reduced significantly in the areas being treated. In most cases, the full effect of the injection is felt after two weeks, although you may notice a significant reduction of sweating within the first few days. The duration of treatment is approximately 6-7 months and repeat injections are needed after that time to maintain efficacy.

Infini RF Microneedling for Hyperhidrosis

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling is a new, cutting edge and effective treatment option for permanent sweat reduction. Using radiofrequency technology, this treatment uses targeted heat to destroy the sweat glands in the treated areas. The majority of patients will experience adequate permanent sweat reduction after only 1 treatment, but up to 3 treatments may be necessary to achieve complete destruction of the sweat glands. The major benefit of this treatment is that it avoids the need for ongoing treatments which are required for the temporary sweat reduction options listed above.
