Getting Ready to Spend Some Time in the Sun?

If you are planning to spend some time in the sun, it’s important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Even on cloudy days.

Apply sunscreen to all areas not covered by clothing. Don’t forget about hands, feet, ears, and lips. Dr. Kurian sees a surprising number of cancers in these areas.

Apply enough sunscreen. For most adults that means approximately an ounce of product, (the size of a golf ball) to fully cover their body. Rub sunscreen in thoroughly and reapply every 2 hours, and/or after swimming or sweating.

Apply sunscreen before going outdoors. It takes 15 minutes for your skin to absorb sunscreen sufficiently to protect you. If you wait until you are in the sun to apply sunscreen, you risk a burn.

Don’t rely on sunscreen alone! Seeking shade, hats, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing all provide added protection when you need it.
