Dandruff

April 14, 2022

Seborrheic dermatitis, more commonly known as dandruff, is a condition that affects more than half of the population.

Dandruff can flare in cold, dry seasons and presents as an itchy scalp, flakes on your scalp, hair, eyebrows, beard or mustache, and/or shoulders. While dandruff isn’t curable, it is manageable!

There are many reasons for dandruff and mild cases of dandruff can often be treated with an over-the-counter dandruff shampoo. Follow the directions specific to the shampoo that seems right for you, but note that we caution light-haired people from using shampoos that contain coal tar. Shampoos with coal tar may discolor light hair like blond, grey, or white.

If dandruff symptoms such as itching and flaking do not clear up with consistent use of dandruff shampoo, it may be time to see a dermatologist. What appears as dandruff could in fact be a medical condition, such as psoriasis, fungal infections of the scalp, or eczema.
